The idea is to die young.. as late as possible!

It is a sensitive issue in The Hague: the state pension age. You will soon have to work until you are 67, because the pensions of the elderly should be paid.In the Netherlands, the total size of the 65+ group will grow to one million. The reason of ageing is that people live longer and the number of births are reducing (CBS, 2016).

Number of factors
The baby boom is a phenomenon of the 50s and 60s. In this time a lot of babies where born. So this is one of the social developments that caused ageing. The baby boom generation will soon retire, which will cause many retirees. Also the medical progress is a factor of ageing by improvements in nutrition, health, medicine and you have the development of contraception. By improved techniques for the prevention of pregnancy, less children are born. (Mens en samenleving, 2014)

Social Megatrend
Ageing is a social megatrend, because this trend has changed the norms and value system of society. CBS expects a growth of the Dutch population over 1 million people in the coming decades. The growth of the Dutch population is found mainly in the increase in the number of elderly (over 65). The number of children and adolescents (0-20 years) will fall, but otherwise remain about the same over the next 50 years. (CBS, 2010). So there is hardly any further hazing but an increase of ageing.

Trend pyramid
The mega trend in the trend pyramid is ageing. This is the cause of life expectancy and the rise of baby boomers. The number of children per family declines. According to CBS the average number of children was 3,1 in 1960 and has fallen to 1,7 in 2016 (CBS,2016). This decreases leads to a different demographic. The result is that there are many more elderly people and fewer young people in the future.

Maxi Trend
The maxi trend inside the mega trend is the end of the welfare state. That means that the state has no longer the primary responsibility. There are not yet found concrete solutions to the ageing problem. Now the ‘ younger ‘ generation should be handed more and more money to save money for the care of the elderly (Nationaal Kompas Volksgezondheid, 2014). An example of this is the retirements. The younger generation can’t stop working at his 67th because they have to pay for the care of the elderly and their retirement.

Trend micro
A micro-trend inside this pyramid is that the children should care of the elderly people in the future. Within the current situation, there is already to little space for the elderly. Also the conditions of the care homes are no longer optimal because of the lack of money and staff within the care sector. With the upcoming ageing population it will only get worse. Due to the approaching end of the welfare, the children will have take care of their parents, like many years ago.

Because people live longer and there are relatively fewer younger people, the state pension might soon disappear. Should the government pay for it or are the citizens responsible for themselves?

  1. I think it’s a very scary thought, what will become of our future as elderly?
Of course it’s very nice to know that we are getting older and older. But if we’re getting older maybe the evolution of the human body will help us a hand and our body will decline later. Or maybe in the future we get medicines that will keep out body young, who knows right?
Organisms were programmed by the process of the evolution of aging to a certain speed (De Voedselzandloper, n.d.). So maybe we can reprogram it in the future.

Of course that’s not our future, our future probably is taking care of the Baby Boomers. That’s a big group of elderly. But when they’re dead. The number of elderly will shrink again and there is maybe even enough space and money for the time we are old. And because of the improved techniques for the prevention of pregnancy, (one of the reasons) why less children are born, there are also more high educated people. Because people have more time to study and find later on a better job. With that, you earn also more money, which you can spend on the more elderly. Less money has to go to the children if there are less children then what used to be.

Really good question and I’m not sure how to answer it. I think we should work together because in some cities and places it is hard to ask people to help there elderly. There are some places in the Netherlands (Schumacher, 2016) for example: South Limburg, South Zeeland and north Groningen were there aren’t a lot of young people who can help there elderly. This is because the younger people moved to the bigger cities to study and eventually work. These places nee to have care from the government, because the can’t expect that these younger people travel this far(daily), to help there elderly al the time. But you also can’t expect that the elderly move to those bigger cities, because the have lived in those small villages whole their life’s, this is a big step for elderly. On the other hand, I agree that when there is the possibility to help the elderly, for instants your parents, that you should help when possible.

Another given fact is that elderly are more sensitive for diseases. That is why there still needs to be care for the elderly. I found some statics (Schumacher, 2016) that tell that there is a rise in the ask for care. The more the diseases and the older the person, the more they ask for care. I think that these cases should get the help they need from professionals. Those elderly didn’t chose to get all those diseases and I think we should all take care of these people the way they deserve.

But there is also something positive about it. For example, the electric bike (Elektrische fietsen, 2016). More than a half of all the Dutch electric bike drivers in the Netherlands is 65 years ore older. And in the last 3 years the users between 50 and 64 made a rise of 7 percent (from 30 till 37). This means that this is a big market. What if we could think of a way that this will be combined with elderly care? What if a part of this earnings go to elderly care?
