Virtual Reality, the big trend of 2016.

Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. That person becomes part of this virtual world or is immersed within this environment and whilst there, is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions.

You might have tried VR yourself. It’s a whole new world that keeps amazing you.

In the past VR was mostly used for gaming. This is probably going to change in 2016. VR will used for other purposes such as education, healthcare or tourism

2016 is going to be the year of virtual reality. VR has always been a promising product, but despite it’s potention VR did not became a big hit until now. This year Sony, Samsung, Microsoft and Oculus are launching their first consumer-ready VR devices. This makes VR more affordable and accesible for more people. This leads to more use of VR. For some time now VR is used in the workfield. For example healthcare students who practice surgery through virtual reality. Or fully simulated battle fields to train soldiers as good as possible. But also in the world of fashion VR is making it’s entrance. Dior and Yves Saint Laurent use VR in their stores to demonstrate several make-up techniques. You can also make a test ride in your dream car, without having to go outside. Virtual Reality is no longer used for gaming only, it’s making it’s entrance in de normal world.

Despite the price, VR can still be hard to use for some people because they suffer from motion sickness while using it. Because what you see doesn’t add up with what you feel you can fall down or get dizzy. Matthijs van Nieuwkerk tries on VR-glasses in his show ‘’De wereld draait door’’. He had a hard time staying in place while he was looking at a movie of a rollercoaster. In the end he takes of the glasses because het can’t handle it anymore.

Virtual reality is a micro trend that comes from the mega trend digitalization. The meso trend behind virtual reality is the trend to interact with your device and the media that you use.VR gives an extra dimension to using media. You can look around and really experience what you see.

What do you think of virtual reality? And can you think of interesting ways to use virtual reality?

  1. I liked the topic of your article and I also think virtual reality is a micro trend. It will probably be a micro trend that will expand a whole lot in the future. I actually experienced a virtual reality game myself. It was a racing game that I was playing with an Oculus Rift and I really enjoyed it. What made it even more fun was that I was sitting in a real racing chair. At first it was really weird but I got used to it quite quickly. I can imagine some people will get sick after playing for a while. The good thing is that the headsets like Oculus Rift will only get better. They will have a better resolution and will also respond better to our movements. This will not only make the experience better but also make u less sick.

I think there will be a lot of interesting ways to experience virtual reality. Think of traveling for example. Maybe travel agencies will use virtual reality to let their costumers experience some of their destinations. You can see landscapes or feel what a city like Tokyo or New York feels like. That way those agencies can get their costumers more excited.
